Optical identifier for detecting active fibers without disturbing them. Detects the signal level in the fiber, 4 adapters for measurement. Sensitivity -40 to 0 dBm. Battery powered. Also determines the direction of the signal.
The device is an optical identifier designed to detect active traffic on an optical fiber without interrupting it. It detects operating frequencies of 270 Hz, 1 KHz and 2 KHz, and in case of detection of an active fiber it produces a service tone and signals the level. The measurement works on the principle that light escapes from the optical cable, which can be measured.
The device comes with four adapters (2 mm, 3 mm, 0.9 mm, 0.25 mm) for optimal adaptation of the identifier to the fiber.

The meter's power is calibrated for wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm. In these, it displays a value of -40 to -5 dBm for 1310 nm, or -30 to +5 dBm for 1550 nm. It will display other wavelengths more inaccurately. The meter's power is truly proportional and the measurement is of course only suitable for identification, not for measuring the actual signal level. The signal power measurement is determined from the average value, therefore for pulse communications it will measure much smaller values than, for example, Gigabit transmitters are declared.
It also measures on patch cables with a diameter of 3 mm and is able to indicate the direction for common 10Gbase-LX modules (which typically have a power of approx. 0 dBm, i.e. 1 mW).
When identifying in more complicated distribution systems, it is preferable to use a special optical signal source, one of the models from the XL-FLS or XL-FMS series. However, a special light source is not necessary for use.
